Introduction

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College (Autonomous) occupies a place of pre-eminence among the educational activities of the Ramakrishna Mission. It is affiliated to the University of Madras and trains students from the graduate level upto the Post-graduate level and admits only men students. Evening College working hours: Monday through Friday between 2.30pm to 7.45pm

The college was granted autonomy from the academic year 2004-2005.

The under graduate course consists of six semesters and the post graduate course consists of four semesters.

Choice Based Credit System

From the academic year 2008-2009 the college follows Choice Based Credit System under semester system for UG and PG courses. The broad scheme of credit and structure of UG and PG courses as given by the Government and adopted by the college is as follows:

  • Those who have not studied Tamil upto XII Std and taken a non_Tamil language under Part-I shall take Tamil comprising of two courses (level will be at 6th standard)
  • Those who have studied Tamil upto XII Std and taken a non-Tamil language under Part-I shall take Advanced Tamil composing of two courses.
  • Others who do not come under a+b can choose non-major elective comprising of two courses.

Notes:

  1. Each paper carries an internal component.
  2. There is a pass minimum for external component.
  3. The students are evaluated in each paper prescribed for the semester separarely under 2 heads -- Internal Assessment for 25 marks and End Semester for 75 marks. In case of practicals, weightage of marks for internal assessment and end semester examination is in the ratio of 60 to 40
  4. Evaluation of Assignments, Tests, Mid-Semester and Model Examinations and soft skills forms the basis of Internal Assessment. There is no passing minimum for Internal Assessment. A minimum of 40% has to be secured in U.G. courses and 50% in P.G. courses in the Semester Examination and also in the aggregate.

Syllabi and Scheme of Examination and the Degree

The syllabi and scheme of examination for evening college students will be one prescribed by the Board of Studies for the respective course and they will be awarded degrees by the University of Madras after they pass the qualifying examination.

Compulsory Extension Service

All the first year undergraduate students have to undergo Compulsory Extension Service, for which 75% attendance is compulsory. All the students must enrol themselves in any one of these:

  1. NSS
  2. NCC
  3. Sports
  4. Rotaract Club
  5. Youth Red Cross Society

Religious Instruction

Religious instruction is given to all students of this College during the first period on every Friday. These classes are inaugurated every year by the President of the Ramakrishna Math, Chennai. The religion classes start with the chanting of the Purusha Suktham, the Narayana Sukta, the Bhruguvalli, Sikshavalli, Sanyasa Yoga and the College prayer, followed by devotional songs and two minutes of silent meditation. After the chanting is over, there will be lectures on the lives and teachings of the Holy Trinity and of Swami Ramakrishnananda (Sasi Maharaj).

In all these classes, attendance will be taken and absence from these classes will be viewed seriously. The College celebrates the birthdays of Sri Ramakrishna, the Holy Mother, Swami Vivekananda and Sashi Maharaj in these prayer meetings.

At the end of the course, an examination in religion for all the classes will be conducted to decide the award of prizes in religion.

Vivekananda Study Circle

The Study Circle was inaugurated in 1974 with a view to inspire the staff and students of this College with the ideals of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. A regular study of the Ramakrishna - Vivekananda literature and other important Hindu scriptures is done under the inspiring guidence of the Rector Maharaj. The student wing is studying Lectures from Colombo to Almora of Swami Vivekananda. Students who attend classes regularly will get a certificate at the end. Classese are generally held once or twice a week during lunch recess. Those who want to join the Study Circle may contact the Professor-in-charge of the Study Circle.
