Department of Plant Biology & Plant Biotechnology

About Department

This department had a humble beginning, from the very inception of the college in 1946, as part of the Natural Science Department.  It offered an intermediate course initially. In the year 1951-52, a two-year B.Sc. (Botany) course was introduced. In 1957-58, the two-year degree was converted into a 3-year B.Sc. degree course in botany with zoology as an ancillary subject.  In 1969-70, the department was shifted to Life Sciences Block, which was built with a partial grant.

from the U.G.C. In 1971-72 the Natural Science Department was bifurcated into full-fledged Botany and Zoology Departments. The M.Sc. Botany course was introduced in 1976-77. The department has a Botany Association for the students, which exposes the students to modern concepts by inviting speakers and by conducting inter-class competitions in plant science. In the year 2000, the staff of this department designed a new syllabus called ‘Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology’ with an emphasis on modern aspects of plant science. The University of Madras adopted this syllabus, which has received a good response from the students for the undergraduate students.

From the year 2002, B.Sc. (Botany) has been changed to B.Sc. ‘Plant Biology & Plant Biotechnology,’ and new application-oriented papers called Algal Biotechnology and Plant Pathology have been introduced for the postgraduate students. The department is a recognized center of research in botanical science. 55 candidates have been awarded Ph. D degree and more than 50 candidates have finished their M.Phil. programme.  At present the department has on its rolls 150 B.Sc. and 22 M.Sc. students, 12 Ph.D. research scholars, and has a strength of 10 teaching staff and 3 lab assistants.

The department has achieved various academic feats by publishing research articles in reputed national and international journals (500) and has taken part in academic forums like seminars/workshops/symposia (100) and obtained research funding from government agencies to a tune of Rs. 2,000,0000 through minor and major research projects from DST, MoEN, DST, and UGC schemes for the cause of education, fulfilling the vision and mission of this great institution.
