About Department

The Department of Chemistry offers B.Sc (since 1947), M.Sc (since 1961) and Ph.D Programmes in Chemistry.

The M.Sc and Ph.D programmes were started by our former HOD and Principal Dr. N. Venkatasubramanian. The Ph.D thesis of the first Ph.D student Dr. S. Sundaram was evaluated by R.G.W. Norrish (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 1967). These programmes provide extensive career and employment opportunities to students. Internships, Industry visits, projects and practicals make these programmes more attractive. The department has one of the best infrastructure for Chemistry students in terms of classrooms, laboratories and research facilities. 

The department has sanctioned strength of fifteen faculty members. Faculty members of the department periodically publish research articles in reputed peer reviewed journals and also author books and book chapters. A total of 71 candidates have obtained their Ph.D degree from this department.

The department of Chemistry provides an ideal platform to engage in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for the students. The department conducts seminars, lecture series and invited talks programmes, where the students obtain greater opportunities to interact with experts and illustrious alumni. In its developmental plan, the department envisages to design more innovative programmes to strengthen industry-institute interface to manage industrial problems and projects.

    Department has the following Endowments:
    Dr. N. Venkatasubramanian Endowment and Dr. V. Thiagarajan Endowment to conduct chemical society invited lectures by eminent scientists and illustrious researchers in the field of Chemistry.
    Professor G. Sundararajan Endowment provides gold medal and scholarship for meritorious performance in UG & PG programmes in Chemistry.
