The Zoology department was started in the year 1980, offering B.Sc. Degree course in Zoology. Prof.K.B. Subramaniam was the first Head of the Department, succeeded by Dr. S. Chandrasekar, Dr. S. Swaminathan, and Dr. A. Bojarajan. Dr. Thiagarajan Raman is presently the Head of the Department. The department was renamed as Br.VI-A, Advanced Zoology & Biotechnology in the academic year 2004 – 2005. Dr. S. Swaminathan was elevated as Principal in the year 2008. The sanctioned strength of faculty is 4+1. The department library has the latest collection of about 3000 books including reference books. 

The department has two smart class facility and well equipped spacious laboratory with all the modern equipment for conducting different practical classes in the field of ZOOLOGY, CELL BIOLOGY, GENETICS, ECOLOGY, PHYSIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY, EMBRYOLOGY, IMMUNOLOGY and BIOTECHNOLOGY. Now it is upgraded with UGC Autonomous grant to conduct various experiments apart from regular zoology practical.

Academically additional attention is given to the students who have some learning problems. The slow learners and the students with language problems are taken care by giving extra classes and motivate them to develop interest in the subject and peer study is encouraged so that every student is involved. Many of alumni still remember and compliment the department for the knowledge and training they gained here. Some of them are working in research labs and institutions in USA, UK, and Germany. Three of our students are the faculty in Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, two scientists in Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, one scientist in National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, many Heads of the departments in various fields are a testimony to the department.
